Homemade Carpet Cleaner

First and Foremost.  Before using any of these cleaners test your carpet for color fastness in an inconspicuous spot or on a remnant of the carpet.  This will avoid bleached out spots or damage to large areas of your carpet.

I can not over stress the benefit of frequent vacuuming of your carpets (or shaking out of small rugs) Vacuuming loosens and lifts trapped dirt and allergens from the fibers of your carpet and helps to lift the fibers keeping them like new.

Stains, here are a few tried and true methods to remove stains in carpeting:

1.

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Filtered water

Mix equal parts vinegar and water in spray bottle.  If spill is fresh blot up as much liquid as you can. Spray with vinegar solution let set for 15 minutes. Blot with clean white rag. If stain still shows repeat. Blot well, rinse with clear filtered water, blot to dry.

2.

  • Kosher salt
  • Borax
  • Distilled White Vinegar

Mix salt and borax, add vinegar to make a paste. Put on stain, brushing gently in a circular motion starting at the outside of the stain and working toward the center.  Allow to dry completely. Then vacuum.

3. Club Soda, especially recommended for wine spills.  Blot up liquid from spill.  Slowly pour a trickle of club soda on the stain, starting at the outside and working in.  Blot and repeat as needed until stain is removed.

4. Hairspray – recommended for ink stains on carpeting or fabric. Blot stain. Spray with hairspray blotting from the outside in. Repeat, stain will lighten quickly but it may take several applications of the hairspray to remove it completely.

5. Baking soda or Cornstarch – recommended to remove oily or greasy stains. Blot if necessary. Sprinkle with dry baking soda or Cornstarch. gently work into stain. Allow to set and absorb the grease. Vacuum. This should remove most of the grease or oily residue, you may need to use one of the other stain removers to completely remove the stain.

General Carpet Cleaner or High Traffic Carpet Cleaner

1.

  • Kosher Salt
  • Borax
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Filtered Water

Mix 1 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar with 2 cups boiling water.  Add filtered water to make 1 gallon of solution.  Solution can be sprayed on carpet, gently clean with a clean sponge and allow to dry. Or may be used in a steam cleaner.

2.

  • Castile Soap
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Filtered Water
  • Essential Oils if desired

Mix 1/2 cup each castile soap, and vinegar.  Add to a gallon of water.  Add in 1/2 cup baking soda and a few drops of essential oils if desired.  Essential oils will add a light fragrance to the cleaned carpet, that will last for several weeks.  Use solution in a spray bottle, sponging to clean or in a steam cleaner.

Remove Carpet Odors

1. Place baking soda in a flour sifter (or a Parmesan cheese shaker) sprinkle liberally over carpet, allow to set for 15 to 30 minutes to absorb odors. Vacuum as usual.

*Adding a few drops of essential oils to the baking soda with leave carpet with a light fragrance.
